Electric Brakes

We have fitted hundreds of electric brake units into vehicles so our customers can safely & legally tow their trailers & caravans. We mainly supply & install the Redarc Tow Pro Elite V3. This Redarc product is a superior unit and very simple to use. The best part is that only a small dial is mounted on your dash with the rest neatly hidden away. This is a necessity these days with the shape of the dash and the presence of knee airbags in late model vehicles. We strongly recommend having our technicians here at Caboolture Auto Electrics professionally fitting the brake unit so as not to interfere with the vehicles electrical system and to have trouble free operation.

If you have an existing electric brake unit that you think is not working properly, bring your vehicle in so we can check it for you & advise on any repairs or replacement that may be required.

Why do I need an electric brake unit in my vehicle?

The law states that any trailer with a gross weight of more than 750kg must have a braking system. Some older trailers have a mechanical braking system called “over riders” fitted. These systems do not need an electric brake unit in the vehicle. However, the majority of trailers & caravans have electric brakes fitted and require a unit in your vehicle to operate them. Some boat trailers have an electric/hydraulic system. This still requires an electric brake unit in your vehicle & may require an extra power feed to the trailer as well. You will void your insurance if you have an accident while towing a trailer over 750kg without the correct braking system operating.

Why do you recommend the Redarc Tow Pro Elite?

We think the Redarc Tow Pro Elite is a superior product because of its simplicity to use, ability to have automatic (proportional) mode for everyday use & manual mode for steep off- road use. It is designed to suit most common trailer braking applications. It fits neatly in the dash with only a small knob visible, the rest is hidden away. Redarc is an Australian company – support Aussie made!

What is proportional braking?

Proportional braking (automatic mode on the Tow Pro) means that the brake unit calculates deceleration as you are braking and applies a suitable amount of braking to the trailer brakes. Meaning, if you are slowly coming to a stop, the unit will put a small amount of braking to the trailer. On the other hand, if you do a hard or emergency brake application the unit will put more power to the trailer. This combines to give you smooth operation at all speeds without adjusting the setting.

What setting do I put the brake unit on?

The setting will differ depending on the weight of the trailer, condition of brakes & adjustment of brakes. This setting will have to be done when you first tow the trailer. It is very simple to do & the instruction booklet will guide you if required. What we do is set the unit to halfway (#5) and make any adjustments, either more or less depending on how the braking of the trailer feels. Once done a final test is to apply the trailer brakes manually by pushing & holding the knob in and making sure the trailer wheels do not lock up. This setting will be different for every different trailer you tow and you may need to adjust to allow for empty trailer or loaded trailer. With caravans the weight is pretty consistent, so once you have done your setting correctly it is set & forget and enjoy your holiday.

What is Automatic Mode?

With the Redarc Tow Pro Elite you have the choice of using automatic or manual braking modes. Automatic mode uses proportional braking, meaning the unit will brake the trailer softer or harder depending on the deceleration of the vehicle. This mode is suggested for all your everyday towing needs.

What is manual mode?

The manual mode means that whatever setting you have the knob set on, as soon as you put your foot on the brake the unit will send that amount of power to the trailer. It does not adjust with different rates of deceleration. This mode would be used in steep off-road terrain.

Do you fit other brands of brake units?

Yes we can supply & fit the Tekonsha brand of electric brake unit. These are a cheaper unit but they are a bulky item that needs to be mounted on the dash somewhere. Or if you have another brand of brake unit we can install it for you.
